View Full Version : XCSkies

February 2nd 14, 07:15 AM
I purchased a subscription to XCSkies in November 2013 and have not been able to log in. Despite 5 emails to XCSkies I have not had the courtesy of a response.
Has anyone had such a problem or have they closed down?

The guys at XCskies have always been great to deal with, and responsive in my experience. Try sending something from another e-mail address, and check your address for them again. I suspect a Spam filter or an incorrect address is the culprit. They also have a support forum you could try. The website is up and running, even though the predominant color is the purple color of glider doom.

Valid points about the past, but I fear things have changed.
I have been an XC Skies subscriber since 2008. Have used XC Skies for tasking at Lake Keepit, where I met David. Probably helped talk him into subscribing.
Have tried to help with David's problem. Gave him the cgalli address to which he sent mail 2 weeks ago including multiple return addresses. Tried to log him on using my own computer which runs XC Skies. Looked at his account, listed as expired. David subscribed just a few months ago. Tried to get on the XC Skies forum to ask more, which results in the message:
"You do not have permission to join this forum"... ********!
Tried to e-mail Chris at the cgalli address on David's behalf. There has been no response yet, but it's only three days - of which two are "the weekend", meaning something to some people. Like others suggest, Chris has been responsive in the past so the issue is not spam, spam, baked beans and spam. Of course, it's possible there are unknown issues that are preventing Chris from responding.
In recent years there were supposed to be updates to XC Skies. An android application coming spring 2012, and Chris and I had discussed convergence mapping. Fortunately several subscription-free RASP and other BLIPMAPs already show convergence.
For those in the northern hemisphere, imagine your subscription not working in May to August. You wouldn't be happy either.

As Jim mentioned, Blipmap and RASP are a great alternative and free. While not as modern and interactive as XCSkies, depend on the location, they may be more reliable and accurate.
For the areas I fly (California and Nevada) I still find the combination of the NAM blipmap and RASP to be the most accurate and useful soaring forecast tools.

I met Chris Galli for the first time about one year ago at an American Meteorological Society national convention, Austin, TX. We had a great conversation and he has many software projects in the works related to atmospheric sciences. Works with Univ of Utah as one of their key web/developers. Sometimes it takes awhile for him to respond to XCSkies questions... but he eventually gets around to it.

Did you manage to get a phone number?
Appears as if he's vanished off the face of the earth.

Good news, Chris just replied to my e-mail. He has had problems with his inbox. A lot of mail went to spam.
David's subscription is fixed.
Others who have sent (apparently lost) mail should soon get replies.

David, our sincere apologies for not getting back to you sooner. Your emails, and in fact many others, were not landing in the proper support folders (or even my inbox) due to an aggressive spam filtering. We use Google Business Apps for email and have never had issues like this, but some apparently changed over the holidays and we're investigating. We owe quite a few people apologies, refunds, and quick resolution. I've sent you (David) direct email regarding what we will do to rectify the situation. Thanks to those who reached out and posted to the XC Skies Forum. This was very helpful to alert us that something was wrong with some of the incoming emails. Again, all apologies and we'll reply to each and every questions and issue that didn't reach us over the last several weeks. And Walter is right--we're quite busy this week two at the AMS meeting in Atlanta (no soaring here either!) presenting our data mining techniques which will soon be leveraged in new ways for our badly needed tech refresh of the UI. So stay tuned and we'll post news on the XC Skies web site as things ramp up this early spring.

Cheers,

Chris Galli

PS. Sorry about those spelling errors above--that's a little embarrassing too :) It's been a long day.

Thank you everyone for your feed back and suggestions. Chris emailed me today and was very apologetic for not getting back to me. There was a slight glitch in their system which has now been rectified and I can now happily use XCSkies.

Thank you Chris for your very nice response and looking after me.

Kind Regards, David Bull

Thanks.

Could someone who is able to contact and get a response from Chris please forward a message for me?
After several attempts since February I'm not sure any e-mails have got through.

I paid for a subscription but my login indicates I do not have a current subscription. Numerous emails send to customer service (links provided on their website) and to Chris but no response.

Happened to me last year. I re-registered and it then showed a valid subscription.

No choice due to lack of response from XCSkies but to initiate claim with credit card company for refund of subscription payment.

Is there something about maintaining a graphical user interface for soaring weather that makes people completely lose interest? This is not the first time.
The date on the link below speaks volumes.

Probably correlated with the millions of dollars that he makes from us....

I'm personally grateful for this incredibly useful tool. I get a helluva lot more than $4.50 worth of utility out of it every month. And I'll bet he has at most 2 or 300 users, not exactly enough to justify a horde of developers, support staff and salespeople.

I updated my subscription this month without any issues. In the past I got hold of Chris using cgalli at xcskies dot com

Andrew et al, I wonder how you would task using this forecast?

Been trying to get that problem fixed for over a year. There has been no response from multiple attempts using several e-mail addresses known to have previously worked. The "it went to the spam folder" excuse is now very tired.
Perhaps the break point for providing any customer service is million dollar profit. But many other soaring suppliers and information providers give excellent service without the big bucks.
